Scripting

We began scripting our piece. We have no dialogue so used the script as stage directions, almost a written version of our story board.

Here is how we began:

We found the script very useful. As along with our animatic and picture of our storyboard on our phones we could take it with us to the set more easily than our full physical story board and use it to refer to in order to make filming quick and easy. It was a helpful rundown of our piece.

Film Inspiration

Inspiration from films

The male bond within films - We have been looking at films containing this hetro-sexual male bond:

Drug taking and quitting drugs - we looked at the quitting cold turkey scene of Train spotting:

Specific Shot Inspiration

Graphic Match - We are wanting to use many match on actions through out our trailer in order to show off out editing skills and easily like from one location to another through zooms:

Music inspiration

We gained inspiration from the music from the film
'Close up'.

Ignoring the dialogue we appreciated the slow build and calmness but effectiveness of this piece of music. It got us thinking about instruments to include.

We feel guitar, piano or orchestral instruments are effective or possibly something with a harsh beat.

Interstellar Analysis

We watched and broke down the trailer of Interstellar. We split it up to find out what made it so powerful and therefore add to our research for our own trailers and the particular  music, shots and editing we should include to bring it to standard.

Run down of initial trailer idea

Powered by emaze

  • Shows logos – diegetic sound of car crash – no visual

  • Cut to child crying/hiding (just experienced crash/trauma), comforting hand of other child, go to a bench/seat, one comforts the other – They become better friends through this

  • Graphic match to same hands in hospital – EMOTIONAL HOSPITAL BIT

  • Shows flashback through editing – bright white – zoom into hospital light (now show their lives before this hospital bit

  • Cut to posh guy getting ready early in the morning – showing him taking pride in his appearance, putting on a suit, combing his hair etc (camera as mirror?)

  • Show watch/clock, then cutting to watch/clock in misfortunate guy’s room, (showing the same time) – still in bed, room is a tip, obviously doesn’t care, no self-pride etc – fades out to black (now jumps to different day in these guys lives - still in past before hospital)

  • Fortunate guy getting out of fancy car, walks into nice building, pans from guy going into door to sign by the door advertising interview/internship – making progress in his career

  • Cuts to misfortunate guy dealing drugs/taking drugs in alleyway – shady, not good

  • misfortunate guy on bench  – costume/mise-en-scene shows he’s scruffy – fortunate guy walks up in very posh suit – obviously well-off – sits down to eat his lunch

  • Pause, then moment of realisation as they recognise each other

  • then cuts to showing the rich guy helping the less fortunate, spending time together-catching up (in coffee shop?)

Iconic Social Realism Directors

The history of Social Realism

In the years following World War I, it was widely felt that the key to a national cinema lay in

'realism and restraint'. This view reflected mainly the south-eastern middle-class audience.

Meanwhile, working-class audiences, favoured Hollywood genre movies. So realism carried

patrician connotations of education and high seriousness.

This has been continued through time today and many differences can be scene within the

genre from different films of different times. Here are some examples:

Notice the difference between 'Passport to Pimlico'. A social realism film from 1949:

AND 'Trainspotting' 1996 and 'Run Fat Boy Run' 2007:

The colours for a start. An obvious difference with the 2007 film. All films now have the option to be filmed easily and with no extra expenses. A privilege that was not an option in 1949.
The story line differences are a main aspect too. As the times change so does the narrative of social realism films. This makes them relatable and therefore realistic to its audience - hence the genre title - Social Realism.

Conventions of Social Realism

Your Views - Audience expectations

WHAT WOULD YOU EXPECT FROM A SOCIAL REALISM FILM?

We asked this question to many volunteers and here are three who sum up the majority points of what they expect to find with in a social realism film, also therefore what we hope to include within ours.

Initial Narrative Ideas (planning)

With our initial ideas we began by using thinking maps to help us finalise our ideas, for exam; we used circle maps and tree diagrams. This was useful because as a group we could discuss our ideas and then put them on paper in a more organised way.
The tree map was particularly useful as it split up 3 of our initial ideas and in the end we managed to bring them back together. This stuck to our genre better as with social realism it is likely our characters are experiencing a mixture of these events.

We had three initial ideas for our SOCIAL REALISM narrative.
We have picked one.

The initial three..

The final one..

No doubt it will be adapted however this is our first idea for out final SOCIAL REALISM narrative.

Narrative conventions

TIME AND PLACE

We did research into narrative conventions - in particular time and place and how it is shown...

We discovered that the main ways it was shown was through were:

  • Lightning bolts and electricity to show time travel
  • Technology - shows future (times machines and spaceships)
  • Graffic matches show objects passing through time or a change of place e.g: space odyssey
  • Cross fades and blurs demonstrate the cross over of certain time period
  • Similar colours (in particular blues) shows the continuous theme of time

Possible production company names

Some example ideas for our production company name... I have been playing around with names we discussed as a group and along with group feedback created some mock up logos in order for a group final decision to be made.

What do you think? Leave a comment and let us know your thoughts..

How has genre changed?

We were given a selection of different films, genres and dates of which we first added to a time line in order to discover how we feel genre has changed. We then chose three categories: 'what came before', 'technology' and 'the outside world' and added the films to these according to their categories. These are our findings on how and why we feel genre has changed over time.
